Cyanotypes Unleashed: An exploration in printing
techniques using Cyanotype

Many of us are familiar with the iconic blueprint- the Cyanotype. This process is popular because of its versatility, low cost, and ease of creating prints at home. However, Cyanotypes do not have to be a typical blueprint on a sheet of paper. You can achieve many different visual results, including different colors and textures, with this process!

This class will begin by learning the fundamentals of Cyanotypes. From there we will learn different toning and bleaching techniques, which will allow our cyanotype to include a variety of textures, colors, and special effects. We will also experiment with different printing surfaces such as paper, wood, bone, and cloth.

The class will then have two options of a direction to proceed:

A) Using learned techniques to print on vintage fabrics (provided by the workshop) to piece together and make our quilts.

B) Or, if sewing is not your thing, you will continue to learn and push the boundaries on using different techniques, printing surfaces, and scale (think big!)

By the end of this course, students will leave knowing the traditional cyanotype process as well as many tools on how to push the process to achieve an aesthetic they desire.

They will also have an understanding of how to make a set-up at home if they wish to continue with the cyanotype process.
